By Euripides
The Greek army and navy with all their ships and soldiers are waiting in the Gulf of Aulis, ready to set sail for Troy in order to return Helen, the wife of Menelaus, who was abducted. The wind is not blowing in the gulf and the army cannot set sail to fight the Trojans. Agamemnon, the commander of the Greek army and Menelaus’s brother, needs to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia to the goddess Artemis so the wind will return and the Greek army can set sail for Troy.
The Greek text deals with the question of how far a leader is willing to go in order to achieve military victory and secure his rule, and clearly outlines the frenzy that grips people on the brink of war.
