The Physical Theatre Research Group: Embodying Narrative through Movement

This workshop invites professional theatre practitioners to delve into the expressive potential of the body as our primary creative instrument. Together, we will:

  1. Explore the body as a conduit for storytelling, transcending traditional narrative boundaries.
  2. Investigate the symbiosis between movement and text, crafting multidimensional theatrical landscapes.
  3. Deconstruct and reimagine physicality within contemporary performance contexts.

Our sessions employ a diverse range of somatic practices and devising techniques, including:

  • Viewpoints
  • Laban effort actions
  • Contact improvisation
  • Gecko’s creative methode
  • Frantic Assembly -building blocks to physical composition

The group cultivates an environment that embraces uncertainty as a catalyst for creativity. By challenging our physical and mental limitations, we aim to unlock new modes of expression and expand our theatrical vocabularies.

Participants will engage in:

  • Collaborative movement scores
  • Text-based physical improvisations
  • Kinesthetic response exercises
  • Composition workshops

This research-driven process examines how movement integrates with other theatrical elements to shape the modern performance experience. We will interrogate the relationship between physical expression, dramatic structure, and textual analysis.

Join in this transformative journey as we push the boundaries of physical theatre and redefine our capabilities as performers and creators.
